The secret to stick-to-it-ness

Jul 13, 2025

Read time: 2.5 minutes

A few weeks ago, someone new joined the Clarity Letter and responded to the question I ask every new subscriber:

“What’s happening in your world that led you to sign up for this newsletter?”

Here’s what they said:

“I’m hopeful that I can settle down my brain and not constantly switch things up on a whim. I put plans in place but tend to get distracted and switch them up before they have time to take hold and show if they’re making a difference.”

Whew.

That hit me hard—because I’ve been there.

You make a plan. You set a goal. You even feel excited about it.

But then…

A few days in, you’re second-guessing everything.

Your brain starts racing with what-ifs and new ideas.

You start to wonder if you made the right decision, and before you know it, you’re reworking everything. The plan that made sense yesterday suddenly feels off. So you change it.

Again.

What I’ve come to realize is that the problem isn’t the plan. It’s the noise in your head convincing you to abandon it before it has a chance to play out.

Sometimes that noise shows up as perfectionism. Other times it’s boredom, impatience, fear of wasting time, or the belief that someone else must know a better way.

But the outcome is the same: you don’t follow through—not because you’re incapable or your plan is flawed, but because you’re talking yourself out of it too soon.

There’s no trust.

And without that trust, you’re constantly rewriting your life mid-draft.

Here’s how I know this.

I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit rewriting plans (for my life, my business, my goals) that probably would’ve worked just fine if I had just stuck with them.

So here’s something I’ve been practicing that might help: pick one thing and commit to it for 30 days. Not forever. Not for the rest of the year. Just 30 days. No tweaks. No pivots. No convincing yourself to start over on a random Tuesday.

Just give your plan the one thing it needs that most people never give it: time.

If doubt creeps in (and it will), write the thoughts down instead of acting on them. There’s something powerful about getting them out of your head and onto paper. It creates a little breathing room. Enough space to decide if the thought is actually helpful, or just another distraction dressed up as logic.

The result?

You begin to build trust with yourself.

Not just because you followed through, but because you stopped abandoning yourself when things got uncomfortable.

And over time, you’ll start to feel something new:

Peace of mind.

Momentum.

Confidence that what you’re doing works—because you gave it a real chance to work.

And in those moments when a pivot is needed, you can switch things up with purpose—not on a whim.

That’s what I want for you.

So, if you’ve been caught in the loop of overthinking, reworking, and starting over… I get it. But maybe you don’t need a better plan. Maybe you just need to believe in the one you already made—long enough to see what’s possible.

Cheers,
-Ron
