The identity gap
Sep 14, 2025Read time: 3 minutes
There’s this uncomfortable space most of us don’t talk about.
It’s the moment when you realize your outer world no longer reflects your inner one.
You’re growing, changing, redefining who you are—but everything around you still represents who you used to be.
That’s the identity gap.
And for a while, I didn’t have a name for it.
But I felt it.
I noticed it after I quit my corporate job.
What I didn’t expect was how hard it would be to let go of all my business casual clothes.
Shirts, slacks, shoes—it was my uniform for 8 years, and at first, I didn’t get rid of any of it.
It felt safer to keep those clothes—just in case.
But over time, each hanger started to feel like a question I hadn’t answered yet.
Quietly whispering, “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
“What if you fail?”
“Maybe it’s smarter to keep one foot in.”
And if I’m honest, this wasn’t the first time I heard those whispers or felt that identity gap.
Years before I walked away from that job, I had to let go of a different version of myself—a persona I clung to for years: Mr. Smooth.
The guy who always had the right thing to say. Who knew how to keep it cool, even when things were falling apart.
On the outside, he was composed. But on the inside? Exhausted from the pressure of performing all the time.
Letting go of that version of myself meant letting go of the clutter that kept him alive—the stuff, the habits, and all the stories I told myself.
And that was scary.
Eventually, I had to ask myself: Am I holding onto this because I love it? Or because I don’t know who I am without it?
That question changed everything.
It helped me see what I was really holding onto.
And maybe you’ve felt this too.
When your stuff—the clothes, the clutter, the identity you’ve outgrown—doesn’t match who you’re becoming...
You feel stuck.
You judge yourself for holding on.
But you don’t fully trust yourself enough to let go.
That’s the tension no one talks about.
The tension between self-judgment and self-trust.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
Clutter isn’t just about stuff. It’s about the stories that stuff tells.
And when your physical environment no longer reflects your internal growth, it creates this friction—an identity gap.
A feeling that you’re out of sync with yourself.
And that’s not just frustrating—it’s draining.
Because every time you walk past the stuff you haven’t dealt with yet (the clothes that don’t fit your life anymore, the half-finished projects from an old dream, the pile of things you said you’d “get to”), you’re reminded of the tension between who you were… and who you’re becoming.
Now that tension can either pull you backwards—or invite you to step forward.
But the only way forward is through the hard part:
Acceptance.
You see, letting go is more than a decision.
It’s a moment of honesty.
You’re not just saying, “I don’t need this anymore.”
You’re saying, “I trust who I’m becoming more than I fear losing who I was.”
That’s what makes it so hard—and so powerful.
When you choose to let go of the clutter that no longer matches the life you’re building, you’re not just tidying up.
You’re choosing alignment.
You’re building trust with yourself.
You’re saying: “This version of me—the one I’m becoming—is worth it.”
So if you’re in the identity gap right now, I just want to say this:
It doesn’t mean you’re lost.
It means you’re in motion.
Growth feels weird because you’re shedding layers of who you used to be. And that means your space, your routines, and your decisions might not fully make sense yet.
That’s okay.
Start by letting go of the things that no longer match who you’re becoming. Even if it’s just one small item or one outdated story you’ve been telling yourself.
Remember clarity doesn’t come all at once.
But it does come when you trust yourself enough to let go.
That’s how you begin to close the identity gap—from the inside out.
See you next Sunday, my friend.
Cheers,
-Ron
