The Ever-Growing To-Do List

Jun 09, 2024

Read time: 2 minutes

For most of my working career, I’ve sworn by a to-do list. Every morning, I’d sit at my desk and write down every little task I needed to complete, thinking it would help me stay organized and on top of things.

Instead, I just felt more overwhelmed.

The list seemed to grow faster than I could check items off, and it felt like I was always behind.

If your to-do list feels never-ending and leaves you feeling stressed and overwhelmed, you’re not alone. We all have those days (or weeks) when our minds are cluttered with tasks.

While our gut reaction is often to write things down, this only offers temporary relief. The list continues to grow, and the pressure to get everything done mounts.

In today’s issue of the Clarity Club I want to share with you three practical solutions to help you manage your to-do list and regain control of your time and sanity.

Let’s dive in.

#1: Prioritize Three Things a Day

Think of this as your daily productivity hack. Instead of drowning in a sea of tasks, focus on three daily priorities. It’s a manageable number and keeps you laser-focused on what truly matters.

By narrowing your focus, you can achieve meaningful progress without the constant pressure of an endless list.

#2: Redefine Success

Striving to complete an ever-growing list is unrealistic and stressful. So, the best thing you can do is change how you measure success throughout your day.

Here’s something that has been working for me. I consider my day successful if I accomplish my three key priorities.

This shift removes the pressure to be hyper-productive and allows you to appreciate your achievements. Any additional tasks completed are bonuses, not expectations.

#3: Give Yourself Permission to Let Go

Let go of the unrealistic expectation to do everything.

Productivity isn’t about doing more; it’s about choosing what not to do. Say no to tasks that don’t align with your priorities for any given day. This will free up mental space and reduce stress, helping you focus on what truly matters.

That’s it, my friend.

No fluff or unnecessary “hacks” just because.

If I’ve learned anything about productivity over the years (especially now that I’m self-employed), it is this:

Stop overcomplicating it.

Doing more is never the answer.

Follow a system that works for you and moves the needle forward without creating overwhelming and stressful feelings.

I hope you consider the system I’ve presented here.

Enjoy this week ahead, my friend!

See you next Sunday!
