Stop Worrying About How Your Growth Makes Others Feel
Dec 01, 2024Read time: 3 minutes
I’ve caught myself several times over the years worrying about “what other people would think” about the decisions I’m making in my life. That’s exactly why, when I decided to leave my job at the end of last year after 8+ years to bet on myself, I kept everything between Alexius and I.
I didn’t want to get stuck in that kind of thinking—and I’m glad I avoided it.
Why am I mentioning this?
Well, we now have 31 days left in 2024, and if you’ve been hesitating to pursue something you really want simply because you fear how others will react—whether it’s taking a promotion, changing your path, decluttering, or even just prioritizing your values—the worry about “what they’ll think” can paralyze you. It’s exhausting, and honestly, it keeps you from reaching your potential.
As a friend who hopes to meet you one day, I want to share a gentle but stern reminder with you:
When you’re on your journey to growth, some people won’t like it. They’ll tell you to be realistic, laugh at your ambitions, and say things behind your back.
Recognize one truth: This is fundamentally not about you.
Your growth, focus, and improvement are exposing something in them: Their insecurities, their fears, their lack of ambition.
You can show them empathy and love, but ultimately, you are not responsible for how your journey to self-improvement makes others feel.
So today, we’re going to explore why it’s time to stop caring—and how letting go of that external pressure can lead to more confidence and freedom in your life.
Let’s unpack this!
The Power of Unapologetic Growth
We all know the feeling of hesitation before taking a step forward, wondering how others might react.
The truth is, when you grow, you challenge the status quo.
And some people will feel threatened by it, not because of what you’re doing, but because it makes them confront their own limitations.
Imagine what life would be like if you let go of worrying about others’ opinions. If you pursued that promotion, launched that side project, or pivoted in a new direction with complete confidence without wondering if anyone’s judging you.
That’s the power of unapologetic growth. It’s stepping into your potential without hesitation or guilt. It’s saying yes to yourself, even if it makes others uncomfortable.
What’s even more powerful is that when you fully embrace your growth, it doesn’t just benefit you—it also opens doors for others. People who are truly supportive of you will rise with you. Those who can’t handle it? They’ll fall away. And that’s okay.
Here’s the best part: You’ll feel lighter, more authentic, and proud of who you’re becoming. (Talk about building a meaningful life you love).
Navigating Growth with Confidence
So, let’s get tactical. How do you start letting go of this pressure and stop concerning yourself with how others feel about your growth?
Let’s keep this simple with a STOP framework.
S: Set Boundaries
Start saying no to things that drain you or make you feel obligated to do what others want. You’re the one in control of your life, and the first step is prioritizing your growth.
T: Trust Yourself
When you catch yourself worrying about others’ opinions, take a step back. Remind yourself that their reactions are theirs to own, not yours.
It’s also important to remember that trusting your instincts and decisions builds confidence. You don’t need others’ approval to validate your path.
O: Own Your Goals
Instead of second-guessing yourself based on others’ opinions, focus on your goals. Write them down and take small actions toward them every day.
P: Prioritize Action
If the idea of unapologetic growth feels overwhelming, begin with small, intentional steps. Taking action and making decisions, even in small doses, helps break the habit of overthinking and boosts momentum.
Here’s a question for you: What’s one step you can take today to start breaking free from the worry holding you back?
The Bottom Line
Your growth, your progress, your success—it’s all yours. You don’t need anyone’s approval to move forward.
By focusing on your journey, you create the space to be more authentic, confident, and fulfilled. You’ll stop holding back for fear of how others feel and start taking the actions that will bring you the life you’ve been craving.
Your next step? STOP concerning yourself with how others feel about your growth.
