“Minimalism is boring” — How to avoid becoming this person
May 28, 2025Read time: 2 minutes
I’ve been practicing minimalism for a decade now, and my home has looked and felt different at every stage of this journey.
But there is one thing that I have progressively gotten better at over the years: making sure my home feels like me—without the clutter.
I have a question for you:
Are you trying to create that minimalist vibe in your home, but instead of calm, it just feels... flat? Like something’s missing? Or it’s just not clicking?
The thing is, minimalism is often sold as this perfect, picture-worthy lifestyle. You know, white walls, neutral tones, sparse shelves. But here’s the problem: when you start chasing that “look,” you might find yourself feeling completely disconnected from what really matters to you.
The truth is, minimalism isn’t about the look—it’s about the feeling. And the moment you stop aligning it with your core values, you risk turning minimalism into a shallow, unsatisfying trend.
And social media doesn’t help.
Those pristine, curated spaces.
So many IKEA hacks to get “the look” at half the price.
It’s all so inspiring.
Everything’s perfectly arranged, with no clutter in sight. It looks so peaceful, doesn’t it? But when you try to replicate it in your own home, it starts to feel... fake.
You might have decluttered. You might have even invested in those simple, neutral items that are supposed to feel minimalist.
But if your home doesn’t reflect your values, it won’t feel like you. Instead, you’ll be left with an empty shell that doesn’t foster the peace or clarity you’re hoping for.
Here’s what to do instead: Be yourself.
A bit too vague?
Okay, let’s unpack this.
When minimalism works, it’s because it aligns with your deepest values. Your space should reflect who you are, not who you think you should be.
Minimalism can be a tool for creating a life that’s intentional, focused, and free of unnecessary distractions. The benefits are deeply transformative.
But to make it truly yours, you’ve got to connect it to your values.
This isn’t about perfecting your decor—it’s about perfecting your life by focusing on what truly matters to you.
When you start here and design your space around that, minimalism becomes a way to create a home that’s not just beautiful, but also meaningful.
The steps are simple:
- Identify your core values
- Evaluate your space
- Design with purpose
If you’re ready to make your minimalist journey your own and create a life and space that truly feels like you, I’d love for you to join me and others in Clarity Lab, where we’re working together to design lives that feel authentic, purposeful, and aligned with our values.
Or you can do it yourself with the Declutter Kit, which shows you how to approach decluttering in two phases—The Practical Sort and the Core Values Filter.
That’s all for today.
Cheers,
-Ron
P.S. You don’t have to follow the “rules” of minimalism to the letter. Instead, focus on living authentically, and your space will naturally start to reflect your true self (without all the clutter).
