How to Build Long-Term Freedom with Small Sacrifices

Apr 06, 2025

Read time: 4 minutes

Yesterday afternoon, I met up with a friend of mine for lunch. What I initially thought would be an hour of catching up turned into three hours of great conversation.

We talked about marriage, kids, business ventures, paying off debt, and local events we’re considering attending. And with every question and idea thrown across the table, the conversation centered around one shared belief: creating a life that lets us prioritize the things we care about most.

Fast forward to sitting down for dinner with my family, I’m reminded of a simple truth:

You have to sacrifice short-term freedom in order to earn long-term freedom.

The things that bring you happiness today are often at odds with the things that will bring you happiness in the future.

Choosing short-term freedom—acting on impulses that give you instant happiness—might sabotage your ability to build the life you truly want.

Instant gratification is great for today, but if we keep choosing short-term rewards, we’re ultimately robbing ourselves of the fulfilling life we’re working toward.

So, what does it really take to build the life you want?

The Allure of Instant Gratification

So here’s what I’ve realized from my 32 years of experience on this earth:

That quick hit of happiness that feels so good in the moment. Whether it’s the late-night scroll through Instagram, the impulse buy, or the “treat yourself” mentality. It’s easy to believe we’re doing the right thing in those moments. After all, we’ve been working hard, so what harm could it do?

But these choices, these small moments of instant gratification, build up. And they add to our clutter—financial clutter, mental clutter, physical clutter—and over time, they keep us from moving forward with the things that truly matter.

Now, am I suggesting that we should never enjoy the moment—no. That would be a lie if I did.

However, one thing I know for sure is that choosing the “easy” path is... well, easy. It’s comfortable. It’s immediate.

The real challenge comes in resisting those quick rewards for something bigger—something that requires patience, consistency, and honestly, a bit of discomfort.

Here’s the truth we love to ignore.

Our future success and happiness rely on making hard choices today. And that’s where most of us get stuck. We’re driven by comfort, and in choosing comfort now, we forget about what it costs us down the road.

Choosing Tomorrow Over Today

The fundamental shift happens when you stop making excuses that selfishly favor the moment.

Choosing tomorrow over today is about intentionally keeping the bigger picture in mind.

And the good news is you don’t have to make huge sacrifices to start seeing the rewards. It’s the small decisions, made consistently, that lead to big changes.

Think about it:

  • Tucking the debit card (or credit card) back in your wallet and choosing a free activity instead.
  • Sitting down once a week (or once a month at minimum) to adjust your budget and put those extra dollars toward debt.
  • Dedicating an extra 20 minutes to your side project rather than zoning out in front of Netflix.
  • Maybe it’s taking 20 minutes to clear one corner of your desk or declutter your closet instead of simply shifting the mess to a new corner or a different room.

These small changes may seem insignificant or be the last thing you want to do in the moment, but remember, each small sacrifice adds up. Over time, they compound, and those tiny shifts in your habits will transform your life.

You’ll find that your financial situation improves because you stopped buying unnecessary things and chose to chop down your debt.

Your physical space will feel clearer and calmer because you made time to declutter.

And your business or personal projects will slowly turn into something bigger, more meaningful, and more fulfilling because you dedicated time and energy to them—bit by bit.

This isn’t about drastic, overnight transformations. Nothing happens that instantaneously.

It’s about stacking small wins that, over time, lead to massive change. You might not see the impact right away, but trust me—it’s happening.

This is how I paid off $23,000 in student loans in 12 months. It wasn’t easy. Sometimes I had to fight the urge to spend on things I wanted. But every time I chose to delay that immediate gratification, a small but growing sense of control and peace came with it. The same thing happened when my wife paid off a $19,000 car in 14 months while we were dating. The sacrifices weren’t always comfortable, but with every decision to put off the “easy” choice, she knew she was moving closer to the life she truly wanted.

This is why we continue to put effort into living clutter-free today on all fronts—because it creates space for new opportunities to grow and new commitments to be made.

That’s the power of delayed gratification.

That’s the benefit of sacrificing short-term freedom in order to earn long-term freedom.

The Bottom Line

You have all the tools you need to build the life you want.

Success and long-term freedom are not out of reach despite how you’re feeling, but you may have to refocus on the big picture.

So here’s what I want you to do starting today:

Pick one short-term sacrifice you’re willing to make. It could be as simple as putting off a purchase you don’t need and putting that money towards debt, or choosing to spend a few minutes decluttering or taking the next step on your side project or business instead of scrolling through social media.

The point is to make a hard choice rather than choosing the “easy” path. Here’s what I want you to ask yourself:

What are you willing to give up now that will pay off later?

It’s worth thinking about.

But here’s the thing: the sacrifice you choose today is just the beginning. If you want long-term freedom, it’s all about consistency, commitment, and intentional choices day in and day out.

That’s all for today.

See you next Sunday.
